We hear the word 'local' so frequently, it is as though it has become an afterthought. I try to live as locally as I can - or at least did - until I took stock of my spending habits and realized I had a long way to go.

For the next year I am attempting to spend 100% of my money 100% locally. No national retailers, big chain grocery stores, no online shopping - just local shops, independent grocery stores, farmers markets in an attempt to keep my money in my community.

I'm not fanatical, don't wish to push an agenda, won't judge others' spending habits, simply trying to figure out just how 'local' one can really be.

* The whole process of blogging was a bit overwhelming for me but the good (local) folks at Business Bullpen made it easy with their Single A Tumblr theme.

So far, so……easy. Hate to risk jinxing myself but really the hardest part of this trek has been keeping up with the blog. So far I have really just made two major changes in my spending - switched to the credit union and found a new place to buy dog food. I have also found a few pleasant surprises along the way too. First of all this is saving me a lot of time. I figured out I can now unsubscribe to almost every email list I am on - no more online shopping for this girl means far less junk in my inbox. Secondly, because I have to watch my spending I have actually spent very little since the beginning of the year. I bought a repurposed bike, the hubs and I then went to Blue Wheel Bikes in the IX building to get helmets and a pump. I bought a cute new yoga top at Bikram Yoga Charlottesville, another top to go over that one at jean theory:, and some great hair bands hand made here in Cville by my friend Dickie Morris from just a little ditty. Other than that I have done my usual coffee and lunch on the Mall - Java Java and the amazing salad bar at The Blue Ridge Country Store.

I need to get a friend a birthday gift - sweet local girl who just moved away…..this could be fun. And a major challenge on the horizon - we need storm windows. Local window shopping post to come.

What are you doing to live locally??
